Obituary

A Mother’s Love, A Mother’s Sacrifices, A Mother’s Prayers, A Mother’s Faith

Teolo Carney Jones, affectionately known to many as “Aunt Doll”, was born on May 25, 1918 to Celia Wilkins Carney and Jolly Gray Carney.  She departed this life peacefully on Thursday, December 13, 2012.   When she was able, Teolo prayed nightly on her knees.  Now, in the words of the lyricists, Teolo has beheld “face to face our Savior and Lord” and, “It is well with” her soul.

Teolo was a native of Tarboro, North Carolina and was educated in Edgecombe County Public Schools.  In 1952 she and husband Fred Jones, along with their young daughter, Delores, relocated to Washington, DC where she lived until returning to North Carolina in 1977.  Upon their return to Tarboro, Teolo re-united with her home church, Conetoe Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. Theodore R. Vines.  In 1997 Teolo lost her beloved husband, but through faith in God, she persevered.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Floyd in 1999, Teolo went to live with her daughter and  son-in-law Carl and Delores Bagby in Williamsburg, Virginia.  When her health began to fail she established residence at Dominion Village, an assisted living facility in Williamsburg.  After approximately a year and a half at Dominion Village, she returned to Tarboro and entered the skilled nursing care unit at the Tarboro Nursing Center, where she remained until her death.

A talented seamstress, Teolo created stylish outfits for many ladies in her community.  She was an excellent cook and her stewed corn was a treat for all who dined at her home.  To this day, the 311 Greenwood Boulevard home in Princeville, North Carolina continues to be regarded as “Aunt Doll’s house.”

Teolo’s memory will be cherished always by her daughter and son-in-law, Delores and Carl Bagby of Williamsburg, Virginia; step daughter, Dorothy Staton of Brooklyn, New York; grandson, Mark Staton Gooden of Brooklyn, New York; brothers, Fred Carney (Verniece), Rockville, Maryland; Alexander Carney (Martha) Hamden, Connecticut, and sister-in-law, Ethel Carney of  Tarboro, North Carolina.  Teolo also acted as a surrogate mother to her niece Clara Staton Branch of Richmond, Virginia.

While at the Tarboro Nursing Center, Teolo was frequently visited and cared for by several loving nieces, Mildred Wilkins, Ann Adams, Sabrena Walston, Earlene Pettaway, the late Evangelist Annie Louise Howell, and a long-time family friend, Elder Clinton Stephens.  She is survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins who reside in California, Nevada, Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia.  Teolo was pre-deceased by seven brothers, William, Jolly, Redden, John, Martin, Ernest, Frank and four sisters Annie, Emily, Bertha and Larney Mae.
